Staying safe online can be challenging as technology and scams develop each day. With so much sensitive information online, we've compiled a few tips from our IT Department at Hendricks Power on how members can stay safe online.

USE STRONG & UNIQUE PASSWORDS
We suggest creating passwords that are 16 characters long. Your password on each site should be different. We highly encourage using a password manager! It can remember all of your usernames and passwords for you.

USE MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION
Multifactor authentication adds an extra layer of protection to your accounts. In addition to your password, some platforms will prompt you for additional personal information, such as a code that was sent to your phone/email, or information sent through an authenticator app.

THINK BEFORE YOU SCAN
Before you scan that QR code, make sure it's from a trusted source. Scanning a QR code can direct you to a malicious website., initiate harmful downloads, or collect sensitive data from your device.

CHECK THE SENDER'S EMAIL ADDRESS
Before clicking links, sharing sensitive information, or opening files in emails, be sure that the sender's email address is correct and credible. Hackers may use an email address that is one character different, add numbers, or use a different domain, like Gmail, Yahoo, or AOL, instead of a company-affiliated domain. Many hackers pose as trusted government agencies, banks, or even utility providers. Be aware of any email that creates a sense of urgency on your part; this is a common trick of phishing attacks and scams.

CHECK THE WEB ADDRESS
When directed to a site and prompted to input any personal information, login credentials, or payment information, be sure to check the URL. Hackers may set up replica websites that look identical to your bank, utility, or other organizations to collect your personal and payment information and use it to hack other accounts or make fraudulent charges.
Following these tips will help you stay safe and secure online!
